Yesterday we announced a new series with BOOM! coming this May! GRIM is the story of Jessica Harrow, a Grim Reaper investigating the secrets of her own death and the afterlife. But what she finds might just alter everything we know about death…
With artist Flaviano Armentaro, colorist Rico Renzi, and letterer Tom Napolitano, I’m thrilled about the chance to create an expansive mythology around death and grim reapers. This project is unlike anything else I’ve worked on and I have an incredible team to collaborate with.
You can read the full press release here.
DON’T FEAR THE REAPER
Grim started with one simple concept - I wanted to tell a story about a dead protagonist. I love unreliable and macabre characters, and a dead character seemed like it would hit both notes. Not that Jessica Harrow is lying to readers… but we are definitely on a mission with Jessica to understand death and, specifically, her own. Jess is the only reaper who doesn’t know how she died. Everyone else has vivid memories of their life prior to death and their final moments. But, for Jess, her memories prior to arriving in the afterlife are a blank slate and she has no idea why.
Cover B by Jenny Frison
This universe is vast and while the series focuses primarily on Jess, she won’t be the only reaper that readers grow to know and (hopefully) love throughout the series. You will see more of these characters soon, but my personal favorites are an 80s hair metal rockstar named Eddie and an early 19th century French Bohemian named Marcel. The reapers are pulled from all over the world and all different time periods, and Flaviano has done an amazing job of creating incredible designs for these reapers. More on those reapers to come soon!
For now, here’s a closer look at Jessica’s design by Flaviano, which I adore!
We will also have more covers to reveal before the release as well, including covers by Dave Johnson and Mike Del Mundo.
Be sure to pre-order Grim issue #1 from your local comic shop. You can read the first three pages of the issue below!
Things are looking... GRIM
I love the premise and the character design, so I'm really excited to pick this one up! Also, a Jenny Frison cover is a must-have.
