New Year, New Comics!

stephsmash.substack.com

Happy belated new year! The end of 2021 and start to 2022 has been absolutely chaotic with health issues and keeping up with deadlines for stuff to come this year. Given all the distractions, I never got to properly thank everyone for supporting the work I put out in 2021. It was an incredibly busy year with the launch of Harley Quinn Infinite Frontier, Wonder Woman: Evolution, We Only Kill Each Other, Nuclear Family, and more. I think I put out more work this last year than pretty much the rest of my career combined (this is a WILD thought) and I’m really excited to keep these projects rolling into 2022. I’m so incredibly grateful for all of the opportunities to keep making comics and telling stories. I could not be more excited for what’s to come this year… so here’s a little preview of what’s happening behind the scenes:

  1. Harley Quinn continues! Riley and I are continuing on with Harley Quinn. We have so much stuff to bring you this year with Harley and think you’re all going to enjoy some of the wild turns we’re taking!

  2. MORE Harley Quinn… yeah… there’s LOTS of Harley goodness happening this year. I can’t talk about it yet… but I am THRILLED to get to announce some of what we’ve been planning and working on. Seeing it all come together and not being able to share it has been tough. But SOON.

  3. Nuclear Family is continuing with Volume 2! Tony and I have been hard at work planning this next volume and bringing a new side to familiar characters from the last volume.

  4. Wonder Woman: Evolution also continues with issue #3 out this coming Tuesday (1/18)!

  5. We Only Kill Each Other issue #3 is out this Tuesday (1/18) on ComiXology with the collected trade appearing in stores in April.

  6. The A Man Among Ye Volume 2 trade paperback will be out in March, with issue #8, the final issue, coming in February.

  7. The Sensational Wonder Woman #1 Special that comes out in March features a 4-part Wonder Woman story that I wrote with artist Alitha Martinez. This story might be a little unusual… but I really wanted to try to give Diana a situation that she has never dealt with before. I won’t say more because I will absolutely spoil the fun. But we hope you enjoy the story and the amazing covers for this issue!

  8. And in February you can also grab the Strange Love Tales with a Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day story I worked on with Jon Sommariva.

There are also plenty of unannounced projects in the works that I can’t wait to talk more about. I’ve mentioned before that I’m working on a new creator-owned book with a new publisher and an artistic team that has been blowing my mind with every new panel. This project has been outside the scope of the rest of my creator-owned projects, which has made is a special challenge to work on, but lots of fun. I think this project is shaping up to be something very special and I’ve been pretty lost in the universe we’re creating (kind of a creepy place to be lost, to be honest!).

I’m also teaming up once more with Ryan Lee for a project for later this year. Working with Ryan is always a pleasure and his creativity is so exciting and inspiring. I hope we’re able to bring you something equal parts weird and fun!

I’ve also been working on an OGN for the past year that is getting closer and closer to making its official appearance in the world. Artist Giulia Lalli has been working so hard on this book and making the characters and story really come to life in a beautiful way. This book is extremely personal to me, and I couldn’t ask for a better collaborator on it. This book actually derives from the very first comic I ever wrote (unpublished) and it feels like I’m coming full circle to revisit this concept in a far more mature way than I did all those years ago.

Finally (well, not finally… but the last thing I’m ready to at least hint at), I’m working with an artist on a horror story involving mountains, WW2 soldiers, and a very old evil. I can’t say more… but it’s going to be dark and creepy, and I can’t wait to work with this artist and get back to telling horror stories!

Just writing this newsletter has me very excited for the future and the new stories I get to bring to you all!

HARLEY QUINN

As I mentioned above, there will be some big Harley things happening this year. I can’t talk too much about them yet, but Riley and I are also continuing on with the Harley Quinn ongoing. We have so much story to tell…

On Jan. 25, Harley Quinn #11 comes out. This issue starts a two-part wrap-up of Harley’s first year back in Gotham and introduces a dangerous new player into the fold. This new character will be a major part of Harley’s year two adventures in many different capacities, so we can’t wait for you to meet them. You can get a little sneak peak of them on the cover of issue #13 below by Riley Rossmo.

Thank you again for continuing to read and support these stories. I’ll also have some convention dates for 2022 to share soonish.

Stay safe and hope you’re all having a great start to 2022!

-Stephanie
